 Istanbul Prepares to Host WUWM 27th Congress
20-07-2010 - The postponed WUWM 27th Congress to be held in Istanbul, Turkey was recently confirmed as taking place 10-13 May 2011. Istanbul Metropolitan Market (IMM) Director, Mr Bayram Ali Çakiroðlu recently met with WUWM Secretary General, Maria Cavit, to finalise the new event venue and logistics.

 WUWM Conference Calls for Better Local Support
01-07-2010 - The 3rd World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Retail Conference held in Dublin, Ireland from 25-26 June 2010 saw delegates from seven European countries in attendance. Discussions included a review of the EU Services Directive, plans for putting retail markets back on the local government agenda, public-private partnerships, as well as the need for more effective marketing and promotion of municipal street markets.

 Berlin Market Opens New Flower Hall
21-06-2010 - On 16 May 2010 the new flower hall at the wholesale market of Berlin (BGM) was officially opened. Fourteen wholesale traders and producers previously located in the old market, as well as Landgard - an association of more than 2.000 producers, moved into the new building with its 12,000 square metres of sales area.

 Bremen Wholesale Market Begins Solar Project
21-06-2010 - The management of Bremen wholesale market has decided to lease 50,000 m² of its roof area to an investor who will use it to build solar roofing to produce climate-protecting energy. The project will begin operations on 30 June 2010.

 German Markets Partner With EnzaFruit
26-05-2010 - During Fruit Logistica 2010, the Association of German Wholesale Markets (GFI) and Enzafruit New Zealand concluded a marketing partnership agreement to organize national promotions with wholesale markets and independent retailers.

 New Palma Conference Dates Approved!
12-05-2010 - Due to the closure of much of European airspace in April 2010 the WUWM Conference to be held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain had to be postponed. 18-04-2010 - As you know there has been an unprecedented closure of much of European airspace over the past four days, and there would appear to be no foreseeable resolution to that problem. Many WUWM Conference delegates have already confirmed that their flights to Palma have been cancelled, while most others are facing that situation imminently.

 Hamburg Market to Host Harley Event
29-03-2010 - Up to 600,000 people are expected to attend a Harley Davidson annual European festival to be held on the Hamburg Market from 25-27 June 2010. Some 50,000 bikers from all over Europe alongside tens of thousands of spectators are expected to visit the market over the festival weekend.

 WUWM Board Gathers in Holland for Annual Meeting
10-02-2010 - An annual WUWM Board of Directors meeting was held in late January in the Netherlands. This year the event was not held as usual within the offices of the WUWM Secretariat, being instead held in the off-market premises of WUWM associate member company, Vroegop Ruhe b.v.

 WUWM Members Display at Fruit Logistica
10-02-2010 - Fruit Logistica is a leading international trade fair for the fresh produce trade held annually in the Messe Berlin in Germany. More than 2,300 exhibitors from over 70 countries were present at this year's fair held from 3-5 February.

 WUWM GPG Adopted as European Community Guide
27-11-2009 - The European Commission for Health and Consumer Protection DG (SANCO) has informed that the WUWM GPG is now formally approved as the European Community Guide to Good Hygiene Practices Specific to Wholesale Market Management.

 UK Government Ensures Survival of Retail Markets
30-10-2009 - The UK Government is taking on the role of protecting traditional markets in the face of increasing pressures threatening their long term survival. Markets are a national tradition, but the growth of out-of-town supermarkets, along with discounters, internet shopping, and a difficult economic climate has caused prolonged decline in many places.

 Official Opening of the New Mercasalamanca Market
30-10-2009 - The official opening of the new Mercasalamanca market took place on 27 October supported by the President of the Castilla y León region, Mr Juan Vicente Herrera.  Seoul's Garak Market Re-Development on its Way
27-08-2009 - Established in 1985 as the first public wholesale market in Korea, Garak Market, with a total area of 543,451m2, is the center of trade for fruit, vegetables, meats and related products in Seoul. Since opening, about 7,600 tons of products have been traded daily (2,4 million tons yearly). Garak Market accounts for 36% of all the trade volumes combined in 33 wholesale markets nationwide, and it represents 46 % of the total quantity of agro-marine products consumed in Seoul.

26-05-2009 - A recent conference of the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) held in Prague, Czech Republic saw delegates from 30 countries of the world in attendance. Hosted by the Lipence Wholesale Market situated in the city of Prague, the conference featured speakers from 10 countries.

 German EOS Partnership
22-04-2009 - The marketing partnership established last year between the Association of German Wholesale Markets (GFI) and the Bozen/Bolzano Chamber of Commerce export organization for South Tyrol, EOS, will be further developed in 2009. GFI will organise a total of 11 promotions between 16 April and 6 May for EOS in the cities of Munich, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Berlin. Customers can sample conventional varieties like Braeburn, Golden and Jonagold, and try the organic Pinova apple.

 WUWM Meets with DG Competition
22-04-2009 - In December 2008 the European Commission (EC) responded to the worldwide surge in food prices by adopting a Communication on Food Prices in Europe. This communication is designed to provide the European Council by December 2009 with an action programme that facilitates a coordinated EU approach to the food crisis, as well as recommendations to better understand a variety of competitiveness issues currently impacting the European food supply chain.

 Work Begins on Copenhagen Markets in 2010
09-01-2009 - Work on what aims to be Northern Europe’s largest, most modern and most efficient wholesale market for food, flowers and florist supplies is expected to start in spring 2010. Copenhagen Markets will replace Grønttorvet, the existing wholesale market in Valby.

 Bremen Retail Markets Praised
15-12-2008 - This year the Living City Foundation "Lebendige Stadt" award for the best European Retail Market went to a 200 year old German green retail market in Nienburg at the Weser which receives some 250,000 visitors annually. The market was honoured with Euro 15,000 in prize money.

 German Markets round up year
24-11-2008 - Members of the development society GFI German Wholesale Markets met in Stuttgart on 11 and 12 November 2008 for their 14th General Meeting. They discussed marketing measures for 2009 which aim to continue the successful PR and media work of past years, primarily promoting the country’s wholesale markets to German consumers and business/political communities.

 Commission to allow sale of 'wonky' fruit and veg
17-11-2008 - Rules governing the size and shape of fruit and vegetables will be consigned to history after European Union Member States recently voted on Commission proposals to repeal specific marketing standards for 26 types of fruit and vegetables. The Commission's initiative to get rid of these standards is a major element in its ongoing efforts to streamline and simplify EU rules and cut red tape.

 WUWM Asia-Pacific Region Launches Conference
15-10-2008 - An Asia/Pacific Regional Working Group was established by WUWM in early 2008. This regional group is chaired by WUWM Board member Mr Zengjun Ma, Chairman of the China Agricultural Wholesale Markets Association (CAWA) and aims to intensify regional collaboration and provide focus and support to the specific interest areas of members in Asia and the Pacific.

 E.U Commissioner Opens Food Market Congress
19-08-2008 - The European Commissioner for Agriculture, Mariann Fischer Boel, will open the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) 26th Congress to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark from 1-3 October 2008. The congress, hosted by Copenhagen wholesale market, Gronttorvet Kobenhavn A/S will be held under the general theme of: Every business is a growth business as long as you know where to look! Congress discussions will focus on both current and future trends in the food and flower sectors, as well as identify the strengths and opportunities facing food markets today.

 Hamburg Glass Kitchen Competition
18-08-2008 - Three prize winners from Glasgow Education Service's Culinary Excellence Programme - David Thomson and Scott McLerie from Smithycroft Secondary School and Raymond Lafferty from Eastbank Academy - and 3 students from the Glasgow Metropolitan College -Seb Wereski, Arran McCredie and Andy Cruikshank - went out to compete in the Glass Kitchen Competition in Hamburg, Germany on 28 June.

 GFI Apple and Kiwi Promotion Boom
16-07-2008 - Together with marketing partners EOS, Bolzano Chamber of Commerce’s south Tyrolean export organization, and Zespri International Ltd, Germany’s wholesale market association GFI has held 50 successful fruit promotions at street markets, in greengrocer shops, and retail market halls.

 Lille Market Renovation
15-07-2008 - An important renovation programme begun in 2001 designed to improve local competitiveness and provide tenants with new development opportunities is now complete on the 40ha wholesale market in Lille, France. Built in 1972, the existing buildings were enlarged in the renovations, allowing for the construction of 4000 m2 refrigerated stores. Loading refrigerated platforms have also been installed, and a totally new flower hall of 2,000 m2 has been built.

 Foundations Laid for New Market in Shenzhen
15-07-2008 - Shenzen, located nearby Hong Kong in the south of China, will boast a new wholesale market 30 hectares in size, with construction due to be finished in 2010. A foundation ceremony carried out for the Shenzhen International Wholesale Market took place earlier this year. The Deputy Secretary of Shenzhen, Mr Liu Yupu, along with Mr Xu Zongheng the Mayor of the City, attended the celebrations along with national and international industry representatives.

 UK Apple Day
03-07-2008 - London's Borough Market, the Lions Part Theatre Company and Southwark Cathedral are uniting this year to celebrate UK Apple Day on Sunday 26th October 2008. Apple Day will be marked by Southwark Cathedral in the Choral Eucharist at 11.00am on Sunday 26th October. Together with Borough Market stallholders the Flower Guild at the Cathedral will deck the Cathedral with special displays using apples and market produce.

 New Copenhagen Market
03-07-2008 - A Danish construction consortium under the leadership of E. Pihl & Søn has won the EU invitation for tenders for the development of ‘Copenhagen Markets’ in Høje Taastrup, Denmark. This market will replace the current wholesale market ‘Grønttorvet’ in Copenhagen, which is the host market for this year’s WUWM 26th Congress.

 WUWM Retail Conference Results in Declaration
16-06-2008 - The recent WUWM Retail Conference held from 12-14 June in Hamburg, Germany resulted in a WUWM Declaration which highlighted the important role of retail markets in EU economies and communities. Figures show that at least 25,000 retail markets operate in the European Union, with more than 450,000 retail market traders operating businesses on those markets. Additionally, more than 1 million people are working on those retail markets with the total turnover surpassing 35 billion Euros.

 Europe's Best Weekly Market
26-05-2008 - The Managing Director of Hamburg Wholesale Market for Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers, Torsten Berens, has been appointed to the jury that will decide who will receive the 'Lebendige Stadt' Foundation Award 2008. In October 2008 he will meet with fellow jurors – people who have made a name for themselves in business, politics, government and academia – to choose 'Europe’s Best Weekly Market'. The award, which also carries a cash prize of 15,000 euros, will be presented in November 2008 in Dortmund Town Hall.

 Chinese Markets React to Earthquake
19-05-2008 - The China Agricultural Wholesale Markets Association (CAWA) reacted swiftly to the earthquake which hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province on May 12. CAWA Chairman, Mr Zengjun Ma, attending a fruit and vegetable trade fair in Hainan on the day of the earthquake, worked to ensure the allocation of fresh food and support to markets in the quake-hit areas.

 New Chairman Urges Greater Understanding of Sector
08-05-2008 - The World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) held Board elections during its recent conference in Mexico City which saw Graham Wallace, Head of Glasgow Markets in the UK become Chairman, and Torben Flinch, Managing Director of Copenhagen Markets in Denmark become Vice Chairperson. Seven Directors were also elected (or re-elected) from the USA, Poland, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy and Mexico. Existing Board members with mandates expiring in 2009 include market representatives from China, Spain, and the Czech Republic.

 German Ban on Selling Below Cost Price
07-05-2008 - It is now 4 months since an amendment to German law aimed at counteract unfair pricing in the food retailing sector entered into force. German Wholesale Market Association (GFI) Chairman, Mr Andreas Foidl, noted that the German wholesale markets united under GFI “wholeheartedly supported the Federal Government in its efforts to take action against price dumping through new economic policies and laws to protect consumers".

 New Health Commissioner presentation before the EP
06-05-2008 - On 1 April, Androulla Vassiliou, the newly appointed European Commissioner for Health, delivered her opening address at a joint session of the Committees for Environment, Agriculture, Employment and Internal Market and Consumer Protection at the European Parliament. In setting out the priorities of her agenda, the Commissioner underlined the need for Europe to work together to deliver the high levels of public health and food safety that European citizens expect and demand.

 Borough Market Wins Yet Another Award
08-04-2008 - The Borough Market in London, renowned throughout the UK for the excellence of its fresh food and its wide range of traders and being an important social and cultural forum for Londoners, has won the NABMA (National Association of British Market Authorities) Best Speciality Market 2008 Award. This award follows its recent receipt of the Evening Standard London’s Best Market Award and the Evening Standard London’s Best Shopping Experience Award.

 European Conference Supports Retail Markets
27-03-2008 - The Retail Section of the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) will hold a European Retail Conference in Hamburg, Germany from 12-13 June 2008. Under the theme "European Retail Markets Driving Communities", the conference will discuss various methods of strengthening and developing retail (covered, street and open-air) markets throughout Europe.

 Developer Sought for UK Market
25-02-2008 - UK urban regeneration company, New East Manchester (NEM), is seeking a development partner for New Smithfield Market in Openshaw, east Manchester. Located less than two and half miles from Manchester city centre, the existing market, which has been operating on its current site since 1972, has approximately 30,000 m2 of lettable space on a 35 acre site. The site is currently 80% occupied with 42 businesses trading in fresh produce including fish, poultry, fruit and vegetables and flowers. This generates £250 million per year to the region's economy and provides 650 jobs.

 Call for supermarkets to be regulated
25-02-2008 - Members of the European Parliament (EP) have signed a written declaration on investigating and remedying the abuse of power by large supermarkets operating in the EU. The declaration requests the European Commission to propose appropriate measures, including regulation, to protect consumers, workers and producers from any abuse of dominant position or negative impacts identified in the course of this investigation.

 New Mercasa President Appointed
18-02-2008 - The General Council of Mercasa (the Spanish national wholesale market network) on proposal of the Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI) announced last week the appointment of Ignacio Cruz Roche as successor to Javier de Paz Mancho who resigned as President last December.
